The Best LitRPG Audiobooks

LitRPG and audiobooks are a natural fit. The genre's in-head narration — status screen popups, internal tactical thinking, the cadence of a level-up — translates exceptionally well to audio. The best LitRPG audiobooks use their narrators the way great film composers use a score: the right voice makes the stats feel dramatic, the combat feel visceral, and the moments of leveling-up genuinely satisfying.

Audible has become one of the primary markets for the genre, and the production budgets reflect it — many of the top LitRPG series now feature professional narrator and production combinations that rival anything in traditional audiobook publishing. Jeff Hays reading Dungeon Crawler Carl is a benchmark not just for LitRPG audio but for the medium.

This list selects for both story quality and narration quality. A great LitRPG with a flat narrator doesn't make the cut. A mediocre story with an extraordinary narrator doesn't make it either. These are the titles genuinely worth your Audible credits.

The Magus posting in Krogga was over, and Gregory and his many wives had finished it with the quiet days they’d all wanted. It’d been an odd five years that’d seen them embroiled in wars, assassinations, political incidents, and far more. The majority had come during their first two years, making things fraught during that time. As Krogheim began to rebuild after Buldoun’s blunder, things had begun to settle down. Good times came for them, too, even if some were attached to dangerous potentials. Claudia Firetongue, protégé of Archmage Aliminus, was brought to Krogga to become the new ambassador for Buldoun. That pulled her back into the circle of the Pettits, who acknowledged her as their secret, hidden wife. Alminus felt placated that they weren’t trying to court her, giving them the minimal freedom to love her the way they all wanted to. Elsa Bommet, their longtime friend, came with Yukiko’s family to visit, too, with more of her odd past being revealed to both them and her. In the end, she stayed true to her dreams, wanting to stay and be their maid and maybe their little sister. That set her on the path of staying in Krogga with Verka to take care of the Warlin’s home and business, meaning she’d eventually be tested for aether outside of the official channels. Time slipped away from all of them with the happiness they had, and before they blinked, their posting was over; now, it was time to return to the empire to be posted as their clan required. Before they got their new orders, they were going to take the long, winding route back because all of them wanted to visit Alturis on their way to Wesrik. This trip would be their last time as a nearly-full family for decades or centuries, so they’d treasure each day to tide them over until they could steal moments together with their loved ones. With so many freshly-minted master magi, wheels would begin to turn. Their rise in power— and the growing power of all Aether’s Guard’s younger generation— was causing waves in the empire and powerful clans. If Aether’s Guard assisted and made alliances to share their power, it would cause problems that might only be solved with blood and death.

They cut his strings. Now the system wants him back. He broke the rules, and a player died. Now something in the code is hunting him. NPCs aren't supposed to notice when the world glitches. Fen noticed. He used to train legends. Now he sends clueless players off to gather mystical berries. While training a batch of button-mashers in a forgotten corner of the SynthNet, the world cracks open — and he watches fractured versions of himself make choices he hasn't made yet. He knows two things: there is something behind the code, and it is after him. The glitches follow him. So does something that knows his name. He won't face it alone. Auri — an ancient AI who uses her world-bending powers to mostly mess with new players — has been hiding something enormous behind every joke since the beginning. And Seraph, a freelance fighter who could land any contract in the SynthNet, chose to stay by his side instead. In a world that rewrites itself every day, that choice means everything. "They couldn't erase you. So they buried you instead. Rewrote you." For readers who care more about the story than the stat sheets and grind — once you've seen behind the code, you can't look away.

A new challenge is thrown down. The world’s secret is revealed. All Probabilities were wrong. Nacho had zero intentions to make friends. He certainly had no plans to be put in the unenviable position of being the leader of a guild. But if there’s one thing that he excels at, it certainly isn’t cooking. No, he’s far better at rolling with the punches, and making sure the people around him survive. When literal monsters are everywhere, that’s the kind of person you want in charge. But this world isn’t what he’s been expecting. Things are different. He is different. By succeeding so much, so fast, Humanity has unlocked the next stage of the Juxtaposition, years before they’re ready for it. A Legendary weapon is up for grabs, and the first guild to grab it will solidify their stranglehold of Kansas City. All Nacho needs to do is find a path to something he’s never heard of before, look for something that shouldn’t exist, and keep his people alive. Time to hold on tight, and chase that dragon.

The Dwarves want to fight. They’re ordered to escape. Turtling up is the best of both worlds. Joe and humanity as a whole messed up pretty badly, managing to get some of the most important people from both the Elven and Dwarven races killed. Now the war is escalating to unprecedented levels, and only one side needs to worry about being slain. With the attackers knowing they can get right back up after dying, they are throwing themselves against their centuries-long foe without caring for the consequences. As the death toll rises, there’s still hope for Joe and the people that he chose to align himself with. His tiny Hamlet is hidden away from the Elves, so the Ritualist gets a quest to escort the core of the Dwarven Oligarchy to safety: their History, and those that lived it. If he can manage to save even a few as the Dwarven Oligarchy begins to Implode, the race might one day have a chance to regain their former glory. There’s only one major issue with convincing the war-loving Dwarves to escape the final battle and hide away: they’re war-loving Dwarves.
